The school reopened for the new academic year, 2016-17, on April 7th.


IAYP (International Award for Young People) Silver Level Adventure Camp was conducted between the 8th and the 12th of April at Hampi and Badami. Thirty silver medal aspirants and fifty bronze level participants from Vidya Mandir left for Hampi on the 8th April. Some of the highlights of the trip were visits to the Vitthala Temple, Virupaksha temple and Lotus Mahal in Hampi, a trek around Aihole and Pattadakal to visit around 15 temples built by the Chalukyas and the rock-cut caves of Badami, a boat ride on the River Tungabadra with visits to the Nava Brindavana Temple and the Pampa Sarovar natural lake.


On 15th and 16th April, VMUN (Vidya Mandir Model United Nations) was conducted for the students of class 9 and 10 by their seniors from class 11 and 12, under the guidance of their Social Science and English teachers.

 

Students of 6, 7 and 8 now get to explore virtual laboratories in addition to carrying out hands-on experiments in the quest lab.  The modernized Quest Lab was inaugurated by our retired Quest Lab teacher Ms. J Visalakshi on April 18th.  Tablet computers have been procured for this purpose at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh, an amount that was presented to our school by Dr. S.Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean, Sastra University, Thanjavur.


On 20th April, Ms. Sumithra Srikant made a presentation on terrace gardening and composting for the members of IGBC (Indian Green Building Council), Environment club and Heritage Club.  As part of the IGBC project, a terrace garden was inaugurated by the principal on 22nd April on the roof of the KG block.  Spinach and lady's finger seeds were planted.


On 21st April, the staff members retiring this year were felicitated by the PTA members during the assembly.  The retiring staff members were Ms. KG Jeyalakshmi, Ms. D. Mahalakshmi and Mr. S.N. Murthy.  The Vidya Mandir newsletter, "Dhwani" was released and the members of Alchemy Kids Theater group performed a skit on corruption. 


The school closed for summer holidays on April 22nd.  Students of class 9, 10 and 12 worked till April 29th.


Forty students from classes 9 and 10 went on a ten-day trip to the Himalayas in May, during the summer holidays.  This year's trek was to the peak, Moar Thach, 12500 feet above sea level.


School reopened after the summer holidays on June 9th.


The different clubs of the school were inaugurated on 15th June during the assembly by Ms.Sruti Harihara Subramanian.  She is a national award winning director and an alumnus of our school.


The Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony was held on 18th June 2016.  The Chief Guest for the function was Dr. R. Ramanujam, Professor, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Taramani.  He presented the "Thirty year service award" to six staff members - Ms. R. Kalaichelvi, Ms. Narmada Ramesh, Ms. Venkata Bhagyalakshmi, Mr. N. Hari Shankar, Mr.V. Ravi Shankar and  Mr. Venkatesa Perumal.  The "Twenty year service award" was presented to five staff members - Ms. Iswari Muthukumar, Ms.Juno Thangakumar, Ms. Sengeni Ramesh, Ms. Shoba Raman and Ms. Vijayasri Sarath. This was followed by the Prize Distribution ceremony.  The prizes for the "Best Outgoing Boy and Girl" in class XII went to Rahul B and Shobana S.   The "Challenge Cup for Best All Rounder Boy and Girl" were presented to Sreeraman V and Pooja Dharmambal respectively.


On 20th June, a total of 68 students from 7 city schools assembled at Vidya Mandir to carry out an astronomy-based event "Project Paridhi" organised by SPACE Technology and Education. The students were asked to find out the circumference of the Earth by taking measurements of the shadows made by the sun in a day, as done by astronomer Eratosthenes, 2300 years ago.  Many students were able to calculate the circumference of the earth with more than 99% accuracy. This event created awareness among the students that it is possible to do science without complicated equipments. 


Alumni Induction was held at 3.30 pm on 24th June in the Sripad Hall. The principal, Mrs Shoba Raman addressed the gathering and inducted the class of 2015-16 into the alumni community. They were briefed about the activities of the alumni by Mr. M. Kannuswamy, President of Vidya Mandir Alumni Association and Mr Deepak another senior alumnus. 

 

On 1st July, the Spam Club members attended a Carnatic vocal recital by Smt. Varalakshmi Anandkumar. In this interactive session, she was accompanied by our students, K K Aravind on the violin and  Rohit Ashok on the mridangam.   

Our teacher, Ms. Vimala Balajee received the "Special Meritorious Service Award" from the organization, International Award for Young People (IAYP), for her dedication in organizing the IAYP program in Vidya Mandir for many years.  She received the award from the chief guest, Mr. Abbas Ali Baig, former Indian Cricket team captain at the "Annual Gold Awards" distribution function held at New Delhi on 14th July 2016.

The intra-school culturals, "Entrenous 2016", was held on 15th and 16th July.  The students of Classes 10, 11 and 12 competed with one another enthusiastically and took the opportunity to showcase their myriad talents.  The top four places were bagged by the 12th standards this year suggesting that experience goes a long way in winning!  12 D was placed first with 72 points, followed by 12 B, 12 A and 12 C respectively.

Vidya Mandir's inter-school cultural event, "Reflections", was held on 22nd and 23rd July. Reflections is being conducted for the 36th time and twenty one city schools participated this year.  New events that were both interesting and challenging were introduced, such as "Whose line is it anyway", "Green screen", "NERF" and "FIFA 16".  PSBB Nungambakkam bagged the overall prize and PS Senior was the runner up. Vishal Sivakumar from PSBB won the coveted title of "Mr. Reflections".

?The 61st Annual Sports Meet was held on 6th August at the YMCA Sports Ground, Nandanam.  The school flag was hoisted by the Chief Guest, Ms. Shruthi Satish who was the Super Senior Sports Champion of Vidya Mandir in 2015-16.  The chief guest declared the sports meet open and the oath taking was led by the sports secretaries, Varun Rao and S. Sneha.   The March Past by the seniors and super seniors followed and the salute was taken by the Chief Guest.   Next was the torch bearing ceremony. The torch was lit by the principal and it was carried around the ground by the top athletes of our school.   Then it was the turn of the primary students to present two coordinated and colourful drills.  The track and field events started soon after and this year professional track judges were appointed to conduct the events.  The Prize Distribution ceremony was presided over by Shri. V. Balaji, Chief Operating Officer of "Gaames Unlimited".   This year Kanchenjunga House emerged as the winner.  The Individual Sports Champions were

Seniors - Dharshini S. and Nithin B.

Super Seniors - C.V. Archisha and Vignesh S.

 

The Annual School Day was held on 24th August at Narada Gana Sabha in the evening.  The program began with Amrita Lahari the school orchesetra consisting of 110 students from class 6 to class12.  This was followed by the Tamil Play, "Evadhu Vilakael" on the joy of giving, based on Kadai-7-Vallagal, the last seven great patrons of Tamil History.  The Sanskrit Play, "Satayavadi Harishchandra" depicted the trials faced by the honest king, Harishchandra, who refused to deviate from the path of truth.  The English Play, "Sixty and Still Young" brought out the timeless nature of memories by showcasing iconic institutions that have completed sixty years, including our own Vidya Mandir!  The superstitions and false beliefs in our society were highlighted in the humorous Hindi Play, "Bache Dada Nani".  The vibrant, well-choreographed dance drama featured the empowerment of women as envisioned by Mahakavi Bharathiyar and had over 50 students participating.  The last program for the evening was the High School English Play, "No Body to Murder" - the play that won the First Place for Nilkant House in the Inter-house Dramatics.

 

On 25th August, members of the girls' trekking club, Cauvery Outbound, set off on a two-day trip to Kothagiri.  The highlights of the trip included a visit to Kodanad View Point, a six hour trek to Rangaswamy Pillars and the evening camp fires.  On the same day, the "Trekkers @ VM" went on a trip to Melkote.  They stayed at a serene thirty-acre camp site called Hosa Jeevana Daari.  They carried out many treks to the nearby hills and also went on a short trip to the nearby forest.

On the 4th of October, the members of the "Trekkers @ VM" went on a four-day trip to TOPSLIP, on the Anamalai mountain ranges.  The trek through the lush green forest was filled with thrilling moments as they were able to spot wild elephants, Malabar giant squirrels and many exotic birds.  They also visited the Monkey falls, which true to its name had plenty of monkeys and the trekkers had to be alert to prevent the monkeys from grabbing their belongings.

Mole day was celebrated on October 24th 2016 during the morning assembly. Students of class 12 demonstrated a few interesting chemistry experiments for the students of classes 6 to 12. A rap song on the elements of the periodic table was rendered by class 10 students. Students of class 9 & 10 made charts on fascinating chemistry facts and these were displayed in the chemistry lab corridor.

On the 2nd of November, the Spam club members attended an interactive lecture demonstration by our alumnus and renowned pianist, Mr. Anil Srinivasan.  He told them the history of many popular tunes including the popular nursery rhyme "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and entertained them by playing many versions of it. He went on to talk about the evolution of music and left them with the idea of being open to a multi-genre approach to music.

Annual Project Day was held on 12th November and the school was abuzz with students who were excited and eager to display the results of their hard work. The Kindergarteners chose the topic "Families Day Out" for their display, while the primary school got transformed into a little "forest"!  The primary students (Classs 1 to 5) took special efforts to create awareness on the ongoing depletion of the forest cover and presented dances featuring the beautiful trees of India. The broad topic assigned to the Middle School (Class 6 to Class 8) was "Innovation" and each class chose a different area such as Alternative Sources of Energy, Sports, Transportation, Genetics and Bioengineering, Space and Robotics, Agriculture, Medicines, Media etc.  The Arts department put up a colorful display of seventy eight "Innovative Designs" selected from the work done by students of class 6 to 12 during their Art period.  The Chief Guest, Ms. Mita Venkatesh, Principal, Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar took keen interest in the project display and appreciated the students for their innovative ideas and their immense enthusiasm.  She released the November issue of the school newsletter, Vidya Dhwani and presented the Inter-House Shield to Nilkant House for obtaining maximum points in all the competitive events held in 2016.

The school reopened for the new academic year (2016-2017) on 6th April.


The school closed for the summer on 21st April. The school will reopen on June 8th after the summer holidays.
